En 1949, la FIM, que acababa de adoptar este nombre, lanzó el Campeonato Mundial de velocidad para cinco categorías:125, 250, 350, 500cc y sidecares. Se corrió en seis circuitos, de los que solamente había uno que fuera permanente, Monza.
Máxima categoría del Campeonato del Mundo de motociclismo, en 2002 pasó a sustituir al GP500 (motos de dos tiempos hasta 500cc de cilindrada) al permitirse cuatro tiempos hasta 990cc. En 2007 vuelve a cambiarse la cilindrada, quedando reservada la categoría a motos de 800cc. El campeonato está organizado por la empresa española Dorna y la Federación Internacional de Motociclismo
